How to Identify your Body Shape

Have you noticed how some women always dress stylishly and know what style of clothes suits them? This is because they know and understand their body shape and have learnt what works and what doesn’t for their shape.

Identifying your correct body shape is one of the most important things a woman should know when it comes to dressing well. It will dictate your best shapes and silhouettes, how you shop, where you shop and what you buy. Not knowing your correct body shape will leave you feeling frustrated because you will be left wondering why certain items of clothing don’t fit right. Or worse wrongly identifying your shape and ending up with a wardrobe full of badly-fitted, unflattering clothes.

Characteristics of the Apple:                                                                                                                 

  • No defined waist
  • The hips tend to have a similar width as the shoulders
  • You do not have a lot of curves and your bust tends to be small or average

As an apple you will need to create the illusion of a waist, highlight your cleavage and shapely legs and create nice vertical lines. Avoid wearing overly loose, baggy clothing.

Characteristics of the Rectangle are:

  • No defined waist
  • The hips tend to have a similar width as the shoulders
  • You do not have a lot of curves
  • Your bust tends to be small or average

As a rectangle you can create the illusion of a waist by defining it. You can also accentuate your figure by wearing well-fitted silhouettes.

Characteristics of the Pear:

  • Your upper body is slimmer than your hips
  • The hips are wider than the shoulders and tend to be curvy
  • Fat tends to accumulated on the hips and buttocks

In order to achieve an hourglass shape and the illusion of a balanced body, you need to accentuate the shoulders by adding volume, draw attention to your upper body and slim waist and elongate the legs.

Characteristics of the Inverted rectangle are:

  • Shoulders are wider than the hips
  • Bust tends to be proportionally large compared to your lower body
  • Hips are small and narrower than your shoulders

You can draw attention away from your broad shoulders or large bust and focus attention on your slim lower body and often lean legs by ensuring all the detailing is on your lower body.

Characteristics of the Hourglass:

  • Well defined (narrow) waist
  • Hip and bust are roughly the same size. You  have a balanced upper and lower body
  • You have an average bust

You should accentuate your feminine body with well- fitted, tailored clothes. Another objective may be to elongate your shapely legs.
